Trauma & Developmentally Informed De-escalation Strategies

April 13 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

This continuing education training equips counselors/social workers/marriage and family therapists with essential knowledge and practical tools to respond effectively to clients in emotional, cognitive, or behavioral crisis, through a developmental lens. Participants will explore foundational human development and learning theories—such as Erikson’s psychosocial stages, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and trauma-informed models—to understand how developmental processes influence crisis behavior. Grounded in developmental theory and Polyvagal-informed approaches, the program explores how emotional regulation capacities shift across age groups and how trauma, including developmental and end-of-life trauma, impacts behavioral expression. Participants will learn to apply situationally appropriate de-escalation techniques that prioritize safety, empathy, and connection, with a focus on effective communication and therapeutic boundary-setting. Practical tools, case studies, and neurobiological principles are integrated to support recovery, resilience, and long-term growth.
